For those with HTC Sensation handsets, today may very well be your lucky day. HTC, the phone company responsible for many of the most popular wireless phones today, has finally added the HTC Sensation to it’s unlocked bootloader list. This is great news for modders, and those wishing to run third party applications on their phones. These applications could include games, utilities, or even music applications.
However, it’s important to keep in mind exactly how the HTC’s unlocked bootloader system works. The main point of contention is that several important parts of HTC’s firmware will remained locked. This means that using HTC’s unlocked bootloader tool will unlock your bootloader, however, it will not give your phone S-OFF status. This may be fine for casual users, but developers and programmers may feel limited.
The most important thing HTC’s unlocked bootloading tool does is flash a modivied version, essentially giving you a custom recovery. From this point, you can run flash the files needed to root the phone. After this strenuous process is completed, you now have the ability to run root-required applications and now have both write and read permissions on all of your phone’s system files.
Before attempting any of this, I would suggest reading as much as you can on flash ROMs and phone root kitting. This could easily lead you into a territory that voids your warranty, or worse, could brick your phone and make it permanently unusable.
Though the point of this article isn’t to speculate, it is also if interest to note that there are rumors online that HTC is planning another update to give phones S-OFF status. Keep in mind that at this point this is entirely speculation, but it may become an important and interesting feature in the future.
